    UNESCO launches Mobile Multimedia Unit for internally displaced persons in Haiti
    To address the problem of isolation of internally displaced persons in Haiti, UNESCO has launched a Mobile Multimedia Unit (MMU) project. The project aims to facilitate the appropriation of new communication tools, especially by youth, in order to increase access to information, build community resilience and encourage social cohesion in the camps.

    In its strategic and programmatic commitment to promoting quality journalism education in Africa, UNESCO will actively participate in the 2nd World Journalism Education Congress (WJEC) to be held from 5 to 7 July 2010 in the South African town of Grahamstown. The theme of the congress, "Journalism Education in an Age of Radical Change", reflects the major social, political, economic and technological changes sweeping across the globe in general and Africa in particular.

    UNESCO supports training for community radios in Brazil
    UNESCO and the Brazilian NGO Jequitibá are holding a training course for community radio operators. The training, which started today, is being held in Santarém, Pará State and Brasilia. Its main goal is to enable community radios to provide higher quality information services to their audiences.

    Director-General condemns killing of Turkish journalist Cevdet Kılıçlar in 1 June attack on flotilla sailing to Gaza
    The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today condemned the killing of Turkish journalist Cevdet Kılıçlar, in the Israeli military interception of the flotilla headed for Gaza on 1 June. The Director-General called for light to be shed on the events that led to the journalist’s death and called on all the authorities concerned to respect the rights of media covering the situation in Gaza.

    UNESCO’s Brasilia Office launches new media development projects
    The UNESCO Office in Brasilia is launching a series of projects aiming at encouraging and deepening the debate on media development in Brazil. The new projects will include activities promoting research, the organization of workshops and seminars, and the publication of documents. Internationally renowned experts will attend field events in the framework of these projects.

    Young TV producers from Central Asia trained on HIV reporting
    A training workshop took place in Almaty from 31 May to 4 June to upgrade the competences of young TV producers and enable them to create quality programmes on HIV issues. The training was organized by UNESCO’s Office in Almaty in cooperation with the Kazakh Institute of Management, Economics and Strategic Research (KIMEP).

    The Departments of Informatics and Information Science of the University of Pretoria have organized training on information literacy at Kgoro primary school, located in Zithobeni township, South Africa. Funded by UNESCO, the training aims to provide teachers with basic skills in ICT and information literacy.

    IPDC-supported projects to build capacity of community media in Nepal
    UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) has recently approved the funding for two projects aiming at capacity building of media and community-based organizations in Nepal. These projects will provide distance learning and build the capacities of community learning centres (CLC) and community multimedia centres (CMC) in Nepal.

    Model curricula for journalism education now available in Nepali
    Journalism education in Nepal can now be planned in a much more systematic and coordinated way, as UNESCO has just released the Nepali version of its guide, Model Curricula for Journalism Education. The guide will shortly be presented to media trainers and professionals during a nationwide workshop.

    CBA has launched new distance-learning course for media regulators
    The Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA) is running a six-week distance-learning course on broadcasting regulation that covers issues ranging from licensing and regulatory processes to content standards and sanctions. The course is base on the CBA/UNESCO Guidelines for Broadcasting Regulation and sponsored by UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC).

    The German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ) joined UNESCO’s strategy to produce gender-sensitive media content and to reduce stereotyping in the Maghreb countries. The objective of a fair and balanced transmission of women’s images is to eliminate socially built gender inequalities in the Maghreb region.

    Director-General condemns murder of journalist Sardasht Osman in northern Iraq
    The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has condemned the murder of independent journalist Sardasht Osman who was found dead in the city of Mosul on 6 May, two days after his abduction in Arbil, capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. Ms Bokova also called for an investigation into the killing.

    Nazrana Chowhdury of NTV, one of the 12 private satellite television channels in Bangladesh, has won the UNESCO Bangladesh Journalism Award 2010 for the best investigative report. The winning report identifies mistakes in primary and secondary education text books.

    UNESCO, in cooperation with Albany Associates, organized the third Master Class in Broadcasting Regulation at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris last March. Representatives of broadcasting regulators and operators from Bhutan, Iraq, Kenya, Malawi, Montenegro, Nigeria, Rwanda, Thailand, and Trinidad and Tobago gathered to exchange experiences and to discuss broadcast regulation with a particular focus on the role of regulation for elections.
