UNESCO’s Communication and Information Sector (CI) has launched a new online service, Knowledgebase, which has been developed to simplify access to different online contents and to enable users of its website to find quick answers to their questions.
14-04-2010 (Windhoek) UNESCO workshop on broadcasting regulation at CBA 2010 General Conference
UNESCO’s Windhoek Office, in partnesrhip with the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA), is organizing a training workshop for 24 broadcasting regulators from the Commonwealth. The workshop will be held on 18 April 2010 within the CBA 2010 General Conference, which is taking place from 17 to 21 April in Johannesburg (South Africa) under the theme “Broadcasting Scores!”.

The Chilean journalist, Mónica González Mujica, a heroine of the struggle against dictatorship in her country, has been named laureate of the 2010 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
12-04-2010 (Quito) Rescuing stories of indigenous peoples through audiovisual media
UNESCO’s Office in Quito has finished the implementation of its project “Rescuing the Stories of Indigenous Peoples through Audiovisual Media”. This project allowed the Association of Kichwa Audiovisual Producers (APAK) from Imbabura, Ecuador, to enhance its capacities and to make a documentary on indigenous cultural identity.
09-04-2010 (Santiago) International conference to mark anniversary of Chile’s Transparency Law
UNESCO’s Office in Santiago organizes the international conference on the Implementation of Chile’s Transparency Law and the Right to Access Public Information. The conference will be hosted by the Chilean Council for Transparency at the Catholic University’s Extension Centre in Santiago from 20 to 21 April 2010. It will mark the first anniversary of the enactment of Chile’s Transparency Law.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today condemned the killing of freelance TV journalist Patient Chebeya Bankome in the city of Beni in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo on 5 April.
08-04-2010 (Moscow) Photo and television contest to commemorate World Press Freedom Day
UNESCO’s Office in Moscow supports the international photo and television contest, Reporting that Changed the Future, which is open to journalists and photographers from the Commonwealth of Independent States and Eastern Europe. The main goal of the contest is to join efforts of media professionals in fostering freedom of expression and freedom of information.

The core issues of the roles, functions and values of public service broadcasters were discussed during the round table in Zagreb, Croatia, on 12 March 2010. The event was organized by the Centre for Media and Communication Research (CIM), at the University of Zagreb, with UNESCO’s support.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today condemned the killing of radio journalists José Bayardo Mairena and Manuel Juárez who were ambushed by gunmen on 26 March in eastern Honduras.

On 18 March 2010 a group of world renowned professionals in library administration and development met in Riga, Latvia, for the 7th meeting of the International Commission of Experts set up by UNESCO for the National Library of Latvia (NLL) project. The aim of the meeting was to assess the progress of the project and to examine current challenges and constraints.

The Intergovernmental Council for the Information for All Programme (IFAP) elected new Bureau members yesterday at its 6th session at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The twenty-four members of the Council nominated Mr Evgeny Kuzmin (Russian Federation) as the Chairman of the Bureau.
30-03-2010 (Paris) UNESCO urges involvement of women’s organizations in promoting freedom of information in Africa
As part of the celebrations of International Women’s Day 2010, UNESCO hosted a roundtable discussion in Paris on 16 March 2010, which highlighted the relevance of freedom of information (FOI) as a tool for advancing women’s rights and empowerment in Africa. The occasion served to formally launch a resource book published by the African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) with support from UNESCO.

26-03-2010 (Paris) 27th IPDC Council adopts Decision aimed at ensuring the Safety of journalists and deterring impunity
At its 27th session, the Intergovernmental Council of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) has elected Mr Raghu Menon (India) as the new Chairman of the Council. The thirty-nine Council members also reached an agreement on the new composition of the IPDC Bureau, which is responsible for the evaluation and approval of IPDC projects.

Training on community media will take place from 29 to 30 March 2010 at the Okangwati Multipurpose Youth Resource Centre in Namibia. It will be hosted by UNESCO, in partnership with MISA Namibia, the Namibian Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, the Kunene Regional Council and the Polytechnic of Namibia.

25-03-2010 (Kathmandu) Enhancing personal security skills of women journalists in Terai
Women journalists working in the Terai region of Nepal are still too often victims of threat and violence. This is why UNESCO’s Kathmandu Office, with the support of the UN Peace Fund for Nepal, continues its efforts to train women media professionals in personal security skills. A training course on conflict-sensitive reporting was conducted from 18 to 20 March 2010.
24-03-2010 (Paris) UNESCO condemns third killing of journalist in Honduras in less than a month
The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, condemned the murder of Honduran journalist Nahúm Palacios Arteaga. According to press reports, Mr Arteaga’s car was riddled with bullets by two gunmen on 14 March in Tocoa, northern Honduras. He is the third journalist to be killed in the country this year.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, condemned the murder of Mexican journalist Evaristo Pacheco Solis. His body was found on 12 March near Chilpancingo, capital of the south-western state of Guerrero.
24-03-2010 (Paris) IPDC Council session begins today marking the 30th anniversary of the Programme
The Intergovernmental Council of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) will meet today for its 27th session at UNESCO Headquarters, which will continue until 26 March. This year is a very significant year for the IPDC as it marks its 30 years of existence.

The number of journalists murdered is increasing, according to a UNESCO report to be published on 25 March. Most victims, says the report, are targeted in countries that are at peace, but where revealing sensitive information – about drug trafficking, violation of human rights or corruption – can mean risking one’s life.

The Mexican community radio station La voz de los campesinos and the Egyptian journalist Amr Mamdou Ellisy will receive the UNESCO-IPDC Prize for Rural Communication on 24 March.

UNESCO participates in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals Fund programme on nutrition and food safety in China. The UNESCO Office in Beijing is responsible for increasing awareness-raising through media about food security in the areas targeted by the programme.
22-03-2010 (Port of Spain) UNESCO hosts Caribbean Conference on Community Multimedia Centres in Trinidad and Tobago
Twenty-five delegates from ten Caribbean countries participated in the UNESCO-sponsored 2nd Caribbean Conference on Community Multimedia Centres (CMCs), which was held in Port of Spain and Toco (Trinidad and Tobago) from 10 to 12 March 2010. The Toco Declaration, adopted at the end of the Conference, outlines the structure of the future association of Caribbean CMCs.
