18-03-2010 (Windhoek) Syllabus on reporting Africa: Findings of discussion forum
UNESCO and Rhodes University have teamed up to roll out an online discussion that will culminate in researching, developing and disseminating a possible syllabus on reporting Africa, based on the UNESCO Model Curricula for Journalism Education. The initial outcome of the online discussion clearly demonstrated a need for such a syllabus.
18-03-2010 (Macao) First inscription from Macao on Memory of the World Register at MOWCAP 4
On 9 March 2010 the Archives and materials of the Macao Diocese from 1550s to 1800s were added to the Asia-Pacific Memory of the World Register. This first inscription from the Macao SAR, China, joined seven other new inscriptions on the Register, from China, Vietnam, Mongolia, New Zealand, Fiji and the Philippines.
17-03-2010 (Mbabane) UNESCO’s Media Development Indicators discussed at workshop in Swaziland
A workshop took place yesterday in Mbabane (Swaziland) to present UNESCO’s Media Development Indicators to decision makers from the Swaziland Ministry of Broadcasting and Information. The event was jointly organized by UNESCO’s Institute for Statistics (UIS) and Windhoek Office under the theme ‘Supporting Media Development Policy with Evidence-Based Data’.

Community radio broadcasters from 20 countries of the Asia-Pacific region have requested to place people’s communications rights at the centre of development. The Bangalore declaration issued at the conclusion of the 2nd AMARC Asia-Pacific Conference calls also for supporting initiatives providing access to digital opportunities and giving the voice to marginalised communities.
16-03-2010 (Istanbul) Media ethics and accountability debated at conference in Istanbul
Professional journalistic standards and codes of ethics were widely discussed at the regional South-East European conference on media accountability, organized by UNESCO on 22 and 23 February 2010 in Istanbul, Turkey. The meeting, entitled “Professional Standards and Self-Regulation in Media and State of Play of Media Policy in South-East Europe”, gathered some 70 professionals from the South-East European (SEE) region and Turkey.
15-03-2010 (Windhoek) Role of community radio in disaster management on agenda of workshop in Namibia
This week UNESCO and UNICEF are organizing a training workshop for volunteers and members of the Board of the Ohangwena Community Radio in Namibia to enhance their capacities in reporting on development issues. The training, which will take place in Eenhana, will particularly focus on disaster risk reduction, preparedness and management.
15-03-2010 (Paris) Expert meeting in Paris revised the concept of knowledge societies
UNESCO organized an expert meeting on “Knowledge Societies: The way forward” on 1 and 2 March 2010, in its Paris Headquarters. The purpose of the meeting was to refine UNESCO’s strategy directed towards building inclusive knowledge societies. A group of global experts from academic, civil society, and governmental sectors participated in discussions on the concept of knowledge societies.

10-03-2010 (New Delhi) Workshop on media ethics for Bhutanese journalists supported by UNESCO
The Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), with the support of UNESCO’s Office in New Delhi, organized a workshop on media ethics for Bhutanese media professionals. The workshop was attended by around 30 participants from the Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BSS) and the emerging print media in the country.

Every 3 May World Press Freedom Day represents an opportunity to commemorate the fundamental principles of press freedom around the globe and to pay solemn tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty. UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day 2010 will be held from 2 to 3 May in Brisbane, Australia. It will highlight the importance of freedom of information as an integral part of freedom of expression and its contribution to democratic governance.

The UNESCO Office in Ramallah and Birzeit University’s Media Development Center have in cooperation produced Children’s Audio Library, targeting youth between 3 and 14 years of age, to promote reading culture, mutual understanding and dialogue.
08-03-2010 (Paris) UNESCO to host discussion on freedom of information and African women’s rights
UNESCO and the African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) are organizing a roundtable discussion during which the book Freedom of Information (FOI) and Women’s Rights in Africa will be launched. The meeting will take place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 16 March 2010 to explore the links between enhanced information flows, women’s empowerment and gender equality, and to promote stronger involvement by women organizations in advancing freedom of information in Africa.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova today condemned the deadly attack on 1 March against Honduran journalists Joseph Hernandez Ochoa and Karol Cabrera, in which Mr Ochoa was killed and Ms Cabrera seriously injured.
05-03-2010 (Paris) UNESCO Director-General condemns assassination of Nepalese media owner Arun Singhaniya
UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, condemned the murder of Nepalese media owner Arun Singhaniya, killed on 1 March in the south-eastern city of Janakpur. Recalling that this is the second such murder in three weeks, Ms Bokova also reiterated her concerns over the continuing threats facing journalists in Nepal.

Nearly 30 bloggers, webmasters and online journalists are back to work with new appreciation for their role in promoting a culture of peace. UNESCO, together with FUNREDES and the Union Latine, launches Twelve years of measuring linguistic diversity in the Internet: balance and perspectives. Written by Daniel Pimienta, Daniel Prado and Alvaro Blanco, this publication is an update to the previous UNESCO study on this subject that was issued for the World Summit on the Information Society in 2005.

UNESCO is inviting new nomination proposals for inscription on its Memory of the World International Register, a list of library collections and archive holdings of world significance, which was established in 1997 to promote documentary heritage of universal value.
02-03-2010 (Paris) UNESCO publishes curriculum on conflict-sensitive reporting
UNESCO has published Conflict-Sensitive Reporting: State of the Art; A Course for Journalists and Journalism Educators. Written by Ross Howard, who teaches journalism at Langara College in Canada and is President of the non-profit Media&Democracy; Group, the study provides guidance to a better understanding of conflict and conflict resolution, and of the news media’s role.
