A workshop on Capacity Building of TV News Reporters for Environmental Sustainability took place last week in Almaty. It aimed to improve the ability of TV journalists in Kazakhstan to conduct research and present balanced coverage of environmental issues. The event was supported by UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC).

25-11-2010 (Paris) UNESCO and Knight Center wrap up pilot training programme for African journalism professors
The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas has just completed an online course as part of an agreement with UNESCO to help journalism professors in Africa with training on digital media. More than 20 professors from Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe followed the course. All of them are from schools included in UNESCO's list of Potential Centres of Excellence and Reference in Journalism Education in Africa.
23-11-2010 (Pretoria) UNESCO and University of Pretoria collaborate to improve information literacy of teachers
UNESCO and the University of Pretoria continue their collaboration in community development with the new initiative aimed at testing UNESCO’s ICT Competency Standards for Teachers and Draft Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Curriculum for Teachers. Two training courses for teachers from Kgoro Primary School, situated in the township of Zithobeni (South Africa), recently took place in the framework of this initiative.

UNESCO and its Information for All Programme (IFAP) are supporting the 5th Asia Pacific Information Network (APIN) Meeting and ICT Literacy Workshop, organized in collaboration with the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) in Manila, Philippines, from 23 to 26 November 2010. The assembly will bring together information policy makers and executives representing APIN member-countries.
19-11-2010 (Sofia) Climate change discussed at workshop for public broadcasters in South East Europe
UNESCO sponsored a workshop for staff from public service broadcasters in South East Europe (SEE) to increase their knowledge on climate change. Some 15 journalists gathered in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 28 to 31 October 2010 to attend training on new ways of cooperation in media reporting on the most important climate changes issues in the SEE region.

The first meeting of the Organizing Committee of the forthcoming Round Table on Communication for Development (C4D) in Ecuador took place last month in Quito. The meeting initiated the evaluation of C4D in the country and stressed the need to reconsider the concept of “development”.

UNESCO, in collaboration with the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and EIFL, is organizing a workshop on the benefits of Open Access for research dissemination, usage, visibility and impact. 17-11-2010 (Tirana) Albanian media met to discuss self-regulation
The second national roundtable on media self-regulation took place last month in Tirana, Albania, to discuss professional standards and ethical norms for new media. Participants expressed the need for a stronger role of moderators in online media and stressed the vulnerable position of journalists vis-ŕ-vis media owners and editors, a significant problem impacting on media ethics.
15-11-2010 (Quito) Role of journalism in building trust among Andean countries on agenda of UNESCO workshops
A recent meeting in Bogota addressed the coverage by media of diplomatic crisis between Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. The strategies identified at this meeting will be shared with larger groups of journalists from the three countries during two forthcoming workshops in Quito (16 and 17 November 2010) and Bogota (3 and 4 December 2010).

UNESCO organized an expert group meeting on the development of a global framework of indicators to measure media and information literacy (MIL) from 4 to 6 November 2010 in Bangkok, Thailand. The event brought together experts from all regions (representing 17 countries) and from a wide range of domains including: media, information, education, curriculum development, psychometrics and statistics.
10-11-2010 (Paris) Arab New Media for Peace and Dialogue: Best practice guide published
UNESCO and the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia (UNESCOCAT) launch Arab New Media for Peace and Dialogue, a best practice guide and pedagogical toolkit, which has been produced as an outcome of the Arab New Media Summit for Peace and Dialogue. A joint initiative of the two organizations, the Summit took place last February in Amman (Jordan).

05-11-2010 (Quito) A series of workshops on ICT literacy for community radios concluded in Latin America
Seven ICT literacy workshops for Latin American community radio broadcasters have been completed since May 2010, under a project implemented by the Latin American association, Radialistas Apasionadas y Apasionados, and supported by UNESCO’s Offices in Quito, San José and Montevideo. Over 190 media professionals attended the training sessions, which were based on the Manual for ICT illiterate radio practitioners, recently launched by UNESCO.

The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) and UNESCO’s Kingston Office will co-host, from 6 to 8 December 2010, a workshop for regional journalists on covering education, science and culture. Twenty journalists from the English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean countries will have an opportunity to discuss how improved coverage of these areas can benefit the social and economic development of the region.

The Governance and AIDS Programme of the African Democracy Institute (Idasa-GAP), in partnership with UNESCO, has developed criteria for assessing the approach to HIV and AIDS in journalism education and training institutions in South Africa. The assessment tool will be piloted at UNESCO’s potential centres of excellence in journalism education in South Africa in the next months.

A seminar in Brasilia debated the draft Media Sector Supplement, a tool that is being developed under the coordination of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) to diagnose corporate responsibility of media companies. A multi-stakeholder meeting was held in Brasilia on 14 October to launch the process of assessing the media situation in Brazil using UNESCO’s Media Development Indicators. The meeting brought together representatives of the authorities, civil society, media associations and academics to discuss the modalities of the application of the indicators.

UNESCO has launched the new website dedicated to Professional Journalistic Standards and Code of Ethics in Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia, and updated the existing section on Europe. This fast, flexible and free online resource provides information on media accountability and self-regulation systems, media legislation and models for setting up and managing press councils.
