More than twenty experts in teacher education gained new insights in curriculum planning and expanded their understanding of course design thanks to a workshop organized by UNESCO’s Bangkok and Jakarta Offices. The event took place in the framework of the Next Generation of Teachers Project to help universities and teacher training centres develop curricula that best support their ICT training needs.
15-10-2010 (Port-au-Prince) UNESCO supports natural disaster training for Haitian journalists
UNESCO and the Organisation for Haitian Journalists (known under the French acronym, AJH) have organized a training programme for 380 journalists from Port-au-Prince and nine other Haitian counties, with the support of the Haitian Department of Civil Protection. The three-day programme aims to prepare journalists to better communicate pertinent information in cases of natural disaster.

In cooperation with Voices on the Rise, an Afghan association of women journalists, UNESCO organizes an exhibition of photographs by Khorshied Samad and Jane McElhone from 22 to 26 November 2010 at its Headquarters in Paris. Voices on the Rise: Afghan Women Making the News provides a look into the lives of Afghan women journalists, producers, managers, writers, photographers, filmmakers, human rights activists and parliamentarians.
14-10-2010 (Baghdad) UNESCO presents Media Elections Project to Communications and Media Commission of Iraq
On 30 September 2010 the UNESCO Office for Iraq made an official presentation of the Media Elections Project to the Communications and Media Commission of Iraq (CMC) at the Commission office in Baghdad. A significant undertaking for UNESCO, this project aims at strengthening the electoral processes in Iraq by building capacity of Iraqi institutions that play important roles during elections.

The Namibian Chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) held its 6th Annual Media Awards on 6 October 2010 in Windhoek. The main objective of the Awards is the recognition of outstanding achievements of Namibian journalists. During election campaigns, when political and economic pressures on the media are most evident, the role of the Press Council is of high importance. This was among the main conclusions of the roundtable dedicated to self-regulation of the media in Bosnia and Herzegovina, organized by UNESCO on 22 September 2010 in Sarajevo.
12-10-2010 (East London) UNESCO meets with South African journalism schools at Fort Hare
UNESCO organized a one-day consultative meeting with the four South African universities designated as centres of excellence/reference in journalism education. The meeting took place yesterday and was hosted by the University of Fort Hare at its East London campus. It focused on the implementation of one of the modules of the Reporting Africa syllabus, based on UNESCO’s Model Curricula for Journalism Education.
11-10-2010 (Johannesburg) Taking stock: Gender, media, diversity and change
UNESCO will participate in the fourth Gender and Media Summit, organized by Gender Links in Johannesburg (South Africa) from 13 to 15 October 2010. The main objectives of this event are to review the progress made over the last years regarding gender and media in Southern Africa, to share good practices and to discuss effective strategies based on the conclusions drawn from the previous achievements.

During the 5th Internet Governance Forum (IGF) last month in Vilnius, Lithuania, UNESCO and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) agreed to work together to further strengthen multilingualism in cyberspace and facilitate the successful implementation of internationalized country code top-level domains (IDN ccTLDs).

The regional seminar, entitled “Freedom of Information: the Right to Know”, gathered government representatives, media professionals from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, as well as general public last September in Montevideo. The event was organized by UNESCO’s Montevideo Office, in cooperation with the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture, the Argentinean Journalism Forum (FOPEA), the Paraguayan Journalists' Forum (FOPEP) and the Uruguayan Press Association (APU).

“Mass media can play an essential role in the preservation of environment in Tajikistan,” stated Karomatullo Olimov, Chairman of the Tajikistan National Commission for UNESCO, in his address to the participants of the training, organized last month in Dushanbe. Entitled “Improving Reporting on Climate Change, Environmental Issues and Biodiversity”, the event was supported by UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC).

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, condemned the killing of freelance cameraman Tahrir Kadhim Jawad on 4 October. He died instantly after a bomb attached to his car exploded in Garma, 80 km west of Baghdad in Anbar province.
06-10-2010 (Kathmandu) UNESCO presents method to assess Nepal’s media landscape
Media professionals in Nepal welcomed the planned assessment of the country’s media landscape, when they met last September in Kathmandu. The assessment would use UNESCO’s Media Development Indicators (MDI), a system designed to identify the key characteristics of a media environment in which freedom of expression, independence and pluralism of the media can flourish and, in return, the media can contribute to the democratisation process.
05-10-2010 (Rabat) IPDC-funded training on online radio started yesterday in Rabat
Twelve teachers and technicians from the Audiovisual Department of the Higher Institute of Information and Communication (ISIC) in Rabat started a one-week course on online radio. The training is funded by the UNESCO International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) and is organized by ISIC and the UNESCO Rabat Office, in collaboration with journalists from Radio Canada.

29-09-2010 (Quito) Winner of World Press Freedom Prize 2010 addresses challenges of investigative journalism in Latin America
The winner of the 2010 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, Mónica González Mujica, stopped by UNESCO’s Quito Office during her visit to Ecuador. She talked about the journalistic treatment that is given to drug trafficking and organized crime in Latin America and about the need for journalists to work together at regional level.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, condemned the attack that killed Luis Carlos Santiago Orozco and seriously injured Carlos Manuel Sanchez Colunga. The two photographers for the daily El Diario were fired on by unidentified gunmen on 16 September in Ciudad Juarez in the state of Chihuahua (Mexico).

UNESCO and the Latin American Association of Communication Researchers (ALAIC) signed an agreement in the framework of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). The restructuring of the ALAIC website and production of the Latin American Journal of Communication Science are among the activities to be implemented under this agreement.

The Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova urged authorities in Uganda to launch a full investigation into the murder of radio news presenter Dickson Ssentongo on Monday 13 September. He is the second journalist to be killed in Uganda in three days.
