    Second set of roundtables on media accountability starts in South East Europe
    UNESCO is giving a new kick-off to the discussion on media accountability in South East Europe by launching the second cycle of national events in the region. The project, Alignment to International Standards in the Media Sector of South-East European Countries, aims at encouraging, assisting and accelerating media reforms in the South-East European countries.

IHEC, together with the Communications and Media Commission (CMC), is one of the key Iraqi stakeholders engaged in the UNESCO-led Media Elections Project.

The workshop, which is taking place from 13 to 15 September 2010 in Bangkok (Thailand), aims to develop a coordinated regional strategy on information policies.

    UNESCO Director-General condemns wave of journalist killings
    “The wave of journalist killings we have seen in recent days is cause for deep concern and must stand condemned,” said UNESCO Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, following the murders of four journalists between 5 and 8 September. The Director-General urged national authorities in the countries concerned to do everything within their power to bring the assassins to justice.

    UNESCO will organize, for the fifth year, workshops at IGF 2010 (14-17 September 2010) with the aim to spark off international debate on freedom of expression in cyberspace. UNESCO would also take this opportunity to release an in-depth analysis and report entitled “Freedom of Connection – Freedom of Expression: The Changing Legal and Regulatory Ecology Shaping the Internet” conducted by the Oxford Internet Institute.

    The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, condemned the murder of the Honduran radio journalist Israel Zelaya Diaz, killed on 24 August, and called on Honduran authorities to take action against the surge of violence targeting local journalists since the beginning of the year.

    The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has condemned the murder of Magomedvagif (Sultan) Sultanmagomedov on 11 August in the Republic of Dagestan (Russian Federation). He was the editor-in-chief of the television station Makhachkala-TV and had escaped a previous attempt on his life in 2008.

    UNESCO has supported a one-week workshop on Media Law & Ethics in Teaching, Research and Practice, jointely hosted by the Chinese Association of Global Communication (CAGC), the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy at Oxford University (PCMLP), the Department of Journalism and Communication at Beijing Foreign Studies University and the School of Journalism and Communication of Tsinghua University. The workshop is taking place from August 23 to 28, 2010 at Tsinghua University, in Beijing.

    An open consultation on the venue for WSIS Forum 2011 (16-20 May) is taking place from 10 August to 15 September. All institutions, companies, networks and individuals interested in the question are invited to participate in this process.
