UNESCO is giving a new kick-off to the discussion on media accountability in South East Europe by launching the second cycle of national events in the region. The project, Alignment to International Standards in the Media Sector of South-East European Countries, aims at encouraging, assisting and accelerating media reforms in the South-East European countries.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, deplored the death of Paul Kuggundu, correspondent of Top Radio and several TV stations in Uganda, on 10 September in the southern town of Rakai. The journalist was killed by an angry crowd during a demonstration.

On 15 August 2010 the UNESCO Office for Iraq made an official presentation of the Media Elections Project to the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) Board at its headquarters in Baghdad. IHEC, together with the Communications and Media Commission (CMC), is one of the key Iraqi stakeholders engaged in the UNESCO-led Media Elections Project.

“The wave of journalist killings we have seen in recent days is cause for deep concern and must stand condemned,” said UNESCO Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, following the murders of four journalists between 5 and 8 September. The Director-General urged national authorities in the countries concerned to do everything within their power to bring the assassins to justice.
