Developing policies on access to public information in Maghreb

A sub-regional workshop on the development of policies promoting access to public information in the Maghreb is taking place from 26 to 28 November in Rabat, Morocco. This 3-day seminar aims at sensitising public service decision makers of the Maghreb countries on the various national strategies existing in the region.
It is jointly organized by the Department of Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology (Morocco), the UNESCO Office in Rabat, Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and Information and Communication Technology for Development in Arab Region (ICTDAR).
Following the decisions of the Expert Group Meeting on Open Source Solutions for the Public Sector (Cairo, 19-21 December 2006), public services of the Maghreb countries are trying to implement open source solutions. The Rabat workshop will be an opportunity to evaluate the available stock of free software, the applications mostly used, institutional support, existing training opportunities, as well as the strategies that have been adopted by administrations to promote free and open source software (FOSS).
The recently concluded World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) addressed the growing opportunity for the public sector to increase the use of FOSS in order to provide solutions for common ICT problems. Development of free and open source software can be an opportunity to ensure free and equitable access to information and to maintain common set of software used for the purposes of the public sector.
The workshop is taking place as a side event to the African Meeting of Free and Open Source Software Users (Rabat, 22-29 November 2007).
