Recreational
Day for Disabled Youths, Mauritius
Often disabled young people
do not feel included in society. Led by Qadir
Mahamoodally, the Savanne Regional Youth Council
(SRYC) gathered 35 youth volunteers to help plan
a day of games and activities for 80 disabled
youths. The project was deemed a big success creating
interest in arranging similar activities for the
future.
Split into two parts, the
activities of this project sought to help integrate
disabled youths into society in a festive environment.
The activities included:
- A day of beach/fun games
at the outdoor center of the Ministry of Youth
and Sports at Flic en Flac
- A prize giving ceremony,
which included speeches and song and dance performances
Senior youth officers from
the Ministry of Youth and Sports were in attendance
as were members of the British Council Delegation.
“This project has given us
a new experience of how the disabled youths live
and it has also given us the opportunities to
share their happiness together. It is very rare
that these children get these types of opportunities.
Seeing the happiness on the face of the participants
on both the beach/fun games and prize giving ceremony
makes us confident that we have been able to achieve
our goals. There has been a demand from the guardians
of these disabled children to organize lots of
others activities and programs for them in the
future.
Together with the members
of the Savanne Regional Youth Council, even all
the youth volunteers have gotten great satisfaction
and it is very encouraging to see these youths
interested to work with the disabled youths again
in the future.”
