Seven ICT literacy workshops for Latin American community radio broadcasters have been completed since May 2010, under a project implemented by the Latin American association, Radialistas Apasionadas y Apasionados, and supported by UNESCO’s Offices in Quito, San José and Montevideo. Over 190 media professionals attended the training sessions, which were based on the Manual for ICT illiterate radio practitioners, recently launched by UNESCO.
Radialistas Apasionadas y Apasionados has finished the implementation of the project, entitled “Websites for All Radios: Workshops for ICT Illiterate Community Radio Practitioners”, which has been developed jointly with UNESCO to upgrade community radios in Latin America. The official launch on 2 July 2010 of the Manual para radialistas analfatécnicos (Manual for ICT illiterate radio practitioners) was an important milestone in this collaboration. The book, edited by Santiago García Gago and published jointly by UNESCO, Radialistas Apasionadas y Apasionados and Radioteca Intercambio de Audios (Radioteca.net), is conceived as a simple and effective tool to assist community radio professionals to master the technological aspects of radio broadcasting.

The workshops used the Manual as the main training material not only for radio technicians but also for radio journalists and reporters, providing in this way ICT expertise to all those involved in radio production. During the three-day workshops, participants worked on the technical aspects of radio broadcasting, conducted exercises with various audio mixing and editing tools and were introduced to the Internet and its applications for community radio broadcasting. The training responded to such questions as "What are P2P networks?", "How to do podcasting?" or "Where’s Internet heading to (Web 2.0 and 3.0)?". Participants especially welcomed the issues related to mixing and editing practices, advice on the Internet safety and social networks, as well as all aspects related to shared property rights (e.g. Creative Commons).

The second component of the project offers free hosting and maintenance services to Latin American community radios upon simple request. The server hosts so far 422 websites. Progress is also being made on the third component of the project, the strengthening and consolidation of Radioteca.net, an audio multicultural platform. Launched in 2007 with the support of UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), Radioteca.net hosts now more than 10,000 audio productions online. As a new feature, a children's section, Radiotekita.net, has been set up, containing tales, riddles, tongue twisters and other resources for children radio programmes.
