The UNESCO Office in Moscow supported a series of curricula development activities in Belarus with the aim to provide academic community with knowledge and materials on media self-regulation and the rule of law. A summer school and two books published in the end of 2009 provide the Journalism Department of the Belarusian State University with a solid theoretical knowledge and practical skills to introduce future journalists and mid-career professionals to the notion of media regulation and self-regulation.

18-12-2009 (Dubrovnik) UNESCO continues its series of roundtables on media self-regulation
Thanks to UNESCO’s support, about 35 media professionals gathered last November in Dubrovnik, Croatia, to discuss the importance of media self-regulation for democracy. The Croatian Media Self-Regulation National Roundtable was organized by UNESCO, in collaboration with the University of Dubrovnik and OSCE, as part of the UNESCO project, Alignment to International Standards in the Media Sector of South-East European Countries.

It resulted in a set of recommendations committing GCC countries to improve the quality of journalism education in the region.
16-12-2009 (Amman) First Arab manual for investigative journalists launched in Amman
UNESCO and ARIJ (an independent Arab non-profit organization) officially launched the first Arab manual for investigative journalists at the second ARIJ conference, which took place last November in Amman, Jordan. Entitled Story-Based Inquiry: A manual for investigative journalists, the publication was jointly produced by UNESCO and ARIJ to fill the gap in the literature of the profession.

UNESCO and the Press Council of Kosovo organized a national roundtable in Prishtina, Kosovo (as understood in the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244), under the theme “Self Regulation of Printed Media in Kosovo”. The meeting took place last month and was a result of cooperation with the South-East European Network for the Professionalization of Media (SEENPM) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova urged the Government of the Philippines to carry out a full and swift investigation into a murderous attack on a convoy in the Minguindanao Province on 23 November, in which more than 55 people, including at least 27 journalists, were killed.
