    The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today condemned the killing of Turkish journalist Cihan Hayirsevener, who was shot dead on 18 December in Bandirma, in Balikesir province. Ms Bokova also called for an investigation into the killing.

    Supporting development of media curricula in Belarus
    The UNESCO Office in Moscow supported a series of curricula development activities in Belarus with the aim to provide academic community with knowledge and materials on media self-regulation and the rule of law. A summer school and two books published in the end of 2009 provide the Journalism Department of the Belarusian State University with a solid theoretical knowledge and practical skills to introduce future journalists and mid-career professionals to the notion of media regulation and self-regulation.

    As a part of its initiative to promote accountability and professional standards in journalism, UNESCO supported the School of Journalism and Communication at Peking University of China to translate a manual on investigative journalism into Chinese.

    UNESCO continues its series of roundtables on media self-regulation
    Thanks to UNESCO’s support, about 35 media professionals gathered last November in Dubrovnik, Croatia, to discuss the importance of media self-regulation for democracy. The Croatian Media Self-Regulation National Roundtable was organized by UNESCO, in collaboration with the University of Dubrovnik and OSCE, as part of the UNESCO project, Alignment to International Standards in the Media Sector of South-East European Countries.

    Teacher trainers from South Asia gathered last week in Colombo, Sri Lanka, for a workshop on UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teacher Education. 35 participants from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan discussed how to educate young people to stay informed in the modern world.

    A Regional Consultation on the Adaptation of UNESCO’s Model Curricula for Journalism Education in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries took place from 8 to 10 December in Bahrain. It resulted in a set of recommendations committing GCC countries to improve the quality of journalism education in the region.

    First Arab manual for investigative journalists launched in Amman
    UNESCO and ARIJ (an independent Arab non-profit organization) officially launched the first Arab manual for investigative journalists at the second ARIJ conference, which took place last November in Amman, Jordan. Entitled Story-Based Inquiry: A manual for investigative journalists, the publication was jointly produced by UNESCO and ARIJ to fill the gap in the literature of the profession.

    UNESCO is to host an international meeting at its Headquarters in Paris on 17 December 2009 to further the inclusion of information and communication technologies (ICT) as part of national development strategies, and to highlight the valuable role that ICT can play in reaching the Millennium Development Goals.

    A significant step was taken on 10 December 2009 towards greater linguistic diversity on the Internet when UNESCO signed an agreement with ICANN - the body that assigns online addresses to Internet users - to help put into operation the first multilingual domain names.

    UNESCO and the Press Council of Kosovo organized a national roundtable in Prishtina, Kosovo (as understood in the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244), under the theme “Self Regulation of Printed Media in Kosovo”. The meeting took place last month and was a result of cooperation with the South-East European Network for the Professionalization of Media (SEENPM) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

This meeting is jointly organized by the IFAP Intergovernmental Council, the UNESCO Secretariat, the Russian IFAP Committee and its working body - the Interregional Library Cooperation Centre. It is officially sponsored by the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO and the Russian Ministry of Culture.
