    UNESCO hosts workshops at Doha global science journalism conference
    The Qatari capital Doha was a hive of activity during the 7th World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ 2011), held from 27 to 29 June 2011. Hosted by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, the Conference provided an opportunity for UNESCO to hold two pre-Conference workshops focusing on science journalism education curricula as well as on reporting climate change and biodiversity.

    Broadcasting regulation workshop is taking place this week in Lesotho
    A five-day training workshop started yesterday in Maseru, Lesotho, to promote existing legal and regulatory frameworks covering broadcasting regulation during election periods, as well as election coverage by broadcasters. This workshop for journalists and the Lesotho Communications Authority is taking place from 18 to 22 July 2011.

    Second round of trainings on election reporting for Tunisian media professionals starts this week
    Within the framework of UNESCO’s programme to support the reform of the media sector in Tunisia, 94 Tunisian journalists and editors-in-chief are being trained to prepare the election of the constituent Assembly on 23 October 2011. The series of trainings benefit both French and Arabic speaking media professionals.

    UNESCO launched model Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teachers
    In a pioneering move to give impetus to media and information literacy (MIL) and civic participation, UNESCO has released a model Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teachers. This Curriculum is an important resource for Member States in their continuing work towards achieving the objectives of the Grünwald Declaration (1982), the Alexandria Declaration (2005) and the UNESCO Paris Agenda (2007) – all related to MIL.

    The First International Forum on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) was organized through partnership among UNESCO, the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University (Morocco), the Islamic Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO), the Arab Bureau of Education for the Golf States (ABEGS) and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and other partners. It was held from 15 to 17 June 2011 in Fez, Morocco, under the auspices of His Majesty King Mohammed the Sixth.

    UNESCO launches Story-based inquiry: a manual for investigative journalists
    UNESCO recently published the English version of Story-based inquiry: a manual for investigative journalists, a useful guide for journalists on how to best exercise investigative journalism. The manual was firstly launched in Arabic by UNESCO and the Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ) at the second ARIJ conference in Amman in 2009. Since then it has been used by many journalists’ training organizations and introduced into curricula of university journalism programmes in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.

    In its drive to lessen the impact of cholera on the Haitian population, UNESCO has joined forces with Haiti’s Ministry of Public Health and Population to produce six animated films of less than two minutes each to raise awareness of the hazards of the disease among the general public, particularly young people.
