The recommendations from a 2008 Regional Conference on Media in the Great Lakes region, jointly organized in Kigali by UNESCO, the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) and the International Media Support (IMS), have resulted in plans for media assessments in 11 African countries. The 58 members of UNESCO’s Executive Board on 22 September designated Irina Gueorguieva Bokova (Bulgaria) as candidate to the post of Director-General. 11-09-2009 (Ramallah) UNESCO provides safety training to Gaza media professionals
35 media professionals from 20 media outlets in Gaza attended a safety training course, organized by UNESCO’s Office in Ramallah and Ma’an Network last August in Cairo. For many participants it was the first time they could travel out of the Gaza Strip. The participants also received psycho-social support in a subsequent workshop on how to deal with the stress and trauma that media professionals in conflict zones often have to endure.

UNESCO participated in the 38th Annual Conference of the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL), which concluded last week in Padua, Italy. This year’s theme, School Libraries in the Picture: Preparing Pupils and Students for the Future, highlighted the increasingly important role of school libraries to equip students in the 21st century with the abilities to use information effectively and develop critical thinking and life-long learning skills that are essential to responsible citizenship.

UNESCO’s Office in Quito, in collaboration with the International Centre for the Advanced Study of Communication in Latin America (CIESPAL), hosted an international seminar entitled ‘Towards the Construction of a Communications Law in Ecuador’. The seminar took place in Quito (Ecuador) from 24 to 26 August 2009, several months ahead of the final law that is constitutionally scheduled to be adopted by October this year.

10-09-2009 (Phnom Penh) UNESCO helps preserve Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Archives in Cambodia
The UNESCO Office in Phnom Penh will assist the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in the preservation of the historical documentary collection from the former S-21 prison and interrogation centre. It is estimated that over 15,000 prisoners were held in this former high school by the Pol Pot regime. The collection, which has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, contains photographs, ‘confessions’ and biographical records of prisoners.
09-09-2009 (Paris) Declaration for an increased public awareness of climate change
Regional broadcasting unions, international broadcasting associations and other stakeholders decided to increase regional and international cooperation, with the support of UN, and step up their efforts to give media exposure to climate change so as to help mitigate its impact and avert potential human suffering. This decision is part of a declaration adopted at the end of a two-day conference at UNESCO Headquarters on 4 and 5 September.
