    Launching Africadoc 2005
    The first phase of Africadoc 2005, an initiative to train independent African film makers, started in Saint-Louis in Senegal where fourteen young African producers of documentary films, coached by two trainers, are writing and developing their film projects during 15 days with UNESCO’s support.

    UNESCO calls for proposals for projects to be funded by its Information for All Programme, an international information society initiative launched in 2001. Proposals with budgets ranging from approximately US$25,000 (national projects) to US$45,000 (international projects) should cover one of three areas: information literacy, preservation of information, and ethical, legal and societal implications of the information society.

    Helping journalists to acquire survival skills and deal with hostile environments as they cover news in conflict zones was the aim of a workshop on “Safety of Journalists in Conflict Areas”, in Amman, Jordan, that UNESCO and the “Dialogue Conference Center”, a Jordanian NGO, organized for some 40 journalists from ten Arab states.

    UNESCO Seed Funding for Universal Scripts Project Complemented US Research Grant
    The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded a two-year grant to the University of California at Berkeley for the Universal Scripts Project, a project that will support authoring of sixteen Unicode script proposals. The NEH grant represents complements seed-funding from UNESCO’s Initiative B@bel, which has funded work on the N’ko and Balinese scripts.

Written by reputed practitioners and researchers working on CMCs or ICT for development, it is available in hard copy, CD Rom and on WebWorld.

    Marrakech Action Plan on Media in the Information Society Now Available
    Organizers of the Marrakech conference on “Role of Media in the Information Society in Africa and the Arab States” have now published the Action Plan on the basis of the inputs provided by various working-groups during the conference held on 22-24 November in Marrakech.

    UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize: New Date for Submission of Nominations
    Nominations for the first UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize can now be submitted up to 28 February 2005. The Prize promotes the objectives of the Memory of the World Programme commemorating the inscription of the Buljo jikji simche yojeol, the oldest known book of movable metal print in the world, in the Memory of the World Register.

    UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura today condemned the killing on December 16 of Deyda Hydara, managing editor and co-owner of Gambia’ independent newspaper The Point, saluting his longstanding commitment in favour of freedom of the press.

    Shaikah Ahmad Al-Mahmood, Qatar’s Minister of Education, urged the Arab media “to undertake their responsibilities towards addressing issues like democratic changes, freedom of expression and human rights in the Arab world”. She was addressing a seminar held on earlier this month in Doha, as part of a three-day meeting organized by UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) on ‘Media Development in the Arab World’.

    UNESCO to Support Production of Eight Films on Human Rights and Tolerance
    UNESCO has now selected eight proposals for film productions for its new project “ICT-enhanced Public Service Broadcasting: Contributing to the development of human rights, peace, tolerance and the fight against discrimination” (ICT@PSB). The selection was made out of 200 submissions that UNESCO received further to an international call to television and film professionals earlier this year.

    Three human rights NGOs in South Asia, members of the International Freedom of Expression eXchange (IFEX), are supported by UNESCO to monitor free expression violations in Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka circulating information locally and internationally in an attempt to protect journalists and media workers.

    Taking pictures of the world cultural heritage site with a digital camera was an exciting experience for the forty-six participants in a photo competition organized by the Lumbini Community Multimedia Centre (CMC) in Nepal. None of participants had used a digital camera before and there was only one camera, which they used by turn.

    Trainees from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan obtained “Microsoft-certified Professional (MCP)” certificates this week after a 30-day UNESCO sponsored training course on advanced system technologies at the Regional Academy for Online Network Governance and System Administration (RAONGSA) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

    Media training facilities at Qatar University were inaugurated last Monday at the University Campus in Doha. The establishment of the new production and post production studio received funding from UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) and a donation from the Commercial Bank of Qatar.

    Over 60 representatives from 16 countries in the Pacific Region met from 1 to 3 December 2004 in Brisbane, Australian, to report on and foster a vibrant telecentre movement in the Pacific Region. Participants identified ICT infrastructure development including rural telecentres as a specific priority for Pacific Islands.

    For the first time ever, Israeli Channel 2 (Keshet TV) and the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation, the official Palestinian Channel have broadcast the same television programme at the same time. On Wednesday evening, 24 November 2004 the two broadcasters showed the UNESCO supported documentary “On the Road to Dialogue”.

    A documentary film entitled Sizanani has just been released by the organizers of the production training and awareness building workshop that took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, September 2004. The film is available for free distribution to broadcasters globally and is the first in the African series of productions created through the Global Network of Young TV Producers on HIV/AIDS.

This project has been planned for the duration of five years by UNDP within its UNDAF objective of Enhanced capacities of key national and local institutions for improved governance.

    Young talents from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania successfully completed a series of cartoon productions, a first in the East Africa Region, under the patronage of the UNESCO led initiative Africa Animated! The trainees followed an introduction to animation, drawing techniques, scriptwriting for animation and storyboarding.

    UNESCO’s Community Radio Guide Now in Arabic
    UNESCO published its first Arabic language manual on “How to Do Community Radio”. The new publication that is a translation of an earlier guide aims at expanding its outreach to the Arab region. UNESCO considers community media as one of the most cost-efficient tools for sustainable development, social inclusion and access to information and knowledge.
