UNESCO Supported Media Training Facilities in Qatar Inaugurated

Media training facilities at Qatar University were inaugurated last Monday at the University Campus in Doha. The establishment of the new production and post production studio received funding from UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) and a donation from the Commercial Bank of Qatar.
Shaikha Bint Jabr Bin Jassem Al Thani, Dean of College of Arts and Sciences, said that around 900 students would benefit directly from the new studio.

Abdul Waheed Khan, UNESCO’s Assistant Director General for Communication and Information, highlighted UNESCO's and IPDC's mandate in the promotion of free flow of information, the development of communication and stressed the importance of capacity building of future practitioners.

Andrew Stevens, General Manager of CBQ, stressed the Bank's commitment to support projects, which impact on the quality of education. He also mentioned that the Bank's Management is proud to be associated with UNESCO in this project, which is the second joint collaboration with UNESCO.

UNESCO’s Gilane Elgewely highlighted the objectives and main features of the project based on technical information provided by STREAMVISION, which undertook the technical execution of the project. A documentary film produced by Qatar University students was then presented.

Abdul Waheed Khan and IPDC Chairman Torben Krogh cut the ribbon officially inaugurating the studio in the presence of Ali Zainal, Permanent Delegate of Qatar to UNESCO, and Youssef Al Khater, Secretary General of Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science.

The ceremony was attended by a large group of Arab Experts participating in a UNESCO meeting for the development of media in the Arab region. Officials from the University of Qatar including its deputy president, heads of departments of college of arts and sciences including department of mass communication and information science, professors and students were also present.
