UNESCO/ICT4D Jamaica regional workshop on digitization of cultural heritage in the Caribbean

15-07-2005 (Kingston)
Within the framework of its mandate to promote the preservation of cultural heritage, UNESCO, in collaboration with Institute for Communication and Development (IICD), the HEART Trust/NTA and the Institute for the Connectivity of the Americas, (ICA), will hold a 5-day regional workshop on the Digitization of Cultural Heritage and Digital Libraries in Jamaica, July 18-22, 2005.
This regional workshop on digital preservation is designed for Caribbean countries with a view to offering theoretical and practical sessions on topics related to the process of digital preservation. The objective is to enhance the capacity of specialists from the region who operate within public, private and NGO entities such as libraries, museums, archives, national cultural commissions, national media producers and producers of cultural content, to deal with aspects of the digital preservation and documentation of cultural heritage.

The workshop which is expected to attract some 40 participants from across the Region, will comprise both theoretical and hands-on sessions, the presentation of case studies, and on-site visits. A panel discussion on Caribbean Culture – A case for Digitization? is also planned. Other sessions will include an introduction to UNESCO’s International Campaign for the Preservation of Digital Heritage and the Regional Digital Library project; creation and sustainable management of digital libraries; intellectual property law and digital rights issues; technical sessions on image, text, audio, audio-visual and photographic digitization.

A pre-and post-workshop on-line discussion comprising local participants, presenters and resource persons will introduce workshop themes as well as regional issues and cases and assist in following-up on action plans arising from the workshop. Regional and local presenters will comprise the team of experts.
