UNESCO Model Curricula for Journalism Education: What can Russia gain?

The Russian version of UNESCO’s Model Curricula for Journalism Education was presented at the round table organized during the International Conference "Journalism-2009: Transformation of the Media in the Modern World”.
The Conference was organized by the Faculty of Journalism of the Moscow State University from 9 to 11 February 2010. It brought together over 300 participants: media educators, representing leading universities of Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan and other countries; media experts, scholars and media professionals.
Participants received questionnaires, prepared by the UNESCO Moscow Office, aimed to identify country-specific needs for introduction and adaptation of the Model Curricula for Journalism Education. The responses will be used to identify the needs of journalism education in Russia and further develop capacities of media training institutions in line with the Model Curricula for Journalism Education.
The Russian versions of two other UNESCO publications, Media Development Indicators: A Framework for Assessing Media Development and Freedom of Information: A Comparative Legal Survey, were also distributed among the participants. This generated an in depth discussion on UNESCO approaches towards the issues of media development. Participants of the Conference expressed their willingness to apply the methodology of the Indicators for research and training, conducted in their respective universities.
This International Conference is one of the major forums for journalism educators, media scholars, experts and journalists from Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries to discuss currents issues and trends in the field of media development and journalism education.
