11-07-2003 UNESCO Expert Meeting on Gender Issues in the Information Society
An Expert Group Meeting on "Gender Issues in the Information Society" will be hosted by UNESCO on Monday, 14 July 2003, at its Headquarters in Paris. The meeting aims at providing space for a dialogue and sharing of innovative ideas and views on how to establish ICT policies and development programmes to ensure that the gender perspective is fully integrated into them.

UNITAR in Malaysia, the Campus Numérique Francophone de Dakar, Senegal, the Universidad Virtual de Quilmes in Argentina and USQOnline in Australia, are but four virtual universities included in a case study entitled "The Virtual University: Models and messages" that was recently published by UNESCO's Institute for Education Planning (IIEP).

"Afiriki tilijii kanolu eletoronik safoolu kafunoomoo" is the Mandinka title of a new CD-ROM containing the "African Language Materials Archive" that was just published by UNESCO. In addition to electronic publications in Mandinka, a language spoken by ca 1,2 million speakers throughout West Africa, the CD-ROM contains texts in Pular and Wolof.

"S21, the Khmer Rouge Killing Machine", directed by Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh and produced by the French Institut National de l’Audiovisuel (INA) and Arte with the support of UNESCO has been awarded the silver medal by the Jury of the 22nd URTI International Grand Prix for Documentaries in the framework of the 43rd Monte Carlo Television Festival (30 June - 5 July 2003).

More and more people are seeing the creative potential of linking the Internet to more traditional communication technologies, particularly radio and television. The UNESCO/APC Multimedia Training Kit (MMTK) provides trainers in telecentres, community media organisations, and the development sector with a structured set of materials to help make that jump between new and traditional media.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, announced this morning, at an information meeting for the staff of the Organization that a second UNESCO expert mission would be leaving for Iraq on 28 June 2003, to take stock of the situation of Iraqi heritage. The misson will include specialists in museums, archives, libraries, historical monuments and archaeological sites.

24-06-2003 (Paris) New CDS/ISIS Tools for Database Publishing Now Available
A new release of GENISIS, the authoring software for visually producing search interfaces for CDS/ISIS databases, is now distributed on UNESCO’s CDS/ISIS webpage. CDS/ISIS is an advanced non-numerical information storage and retrieval software developed by UNESCO since 1985 to satisfy the need expressed by many institutions, especially in developing countries, to be able to streamline their information processing activities by using modern (and relatively inexpensive) technologies.
23-06-2003 First Lady of Senegal Inaugurates Community Radio
The First Lady of Senegal Viviane Wade and UNESCO Dakar Office Director Armoogum Parsuramen inaugurated a community radio in the Senegalese village of Mbissao last week. UNESCO donated a so called suitcase radio - a portable FM station - and 40 oil lamps comprising an FM receiver powered by the heat of the flame.
