UNESCO calls for design proposals to prepare its pavilion “Empowering persons with disabilities through ICTs” at ITU Telecom World 2009, to be held from 5 to 9 October 2009 in Geneva, Switzerland. Through its pavilion UNESCO aims to showcase successful ICT applications for people with disabilities in the area of education, sciences, culture, communication and information.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecom World 2009 is a major event for the global telecom and ICT sector. WORLD 2009 attracts key players from IT industry, governmental organizations, civil society, international organizations and academia for a truly global, world-class event and networking platform. To address shared global challenges in today’s information society, it incorporates thematic elements highlighting the reach and role of telecommunications and ICT in areas of societal change.
About 10 per cent of the world’s population has a disability of one form or another. While their living conditions vary, these people are united in one common experience – being exposed to various forms of discrimination and social exclusion. Even in the absence of a well-coordinated and well-planned infrastructure, information and communication technologies (ICTs) can offer them new opportunities to compensate for physical and functional limitations, to access knowledge and to enhance social and economic integration.
UNESCO’s Pavilion will showcase successful ICT applications, devices and services for people with disabilities in the areas of education, sciences, culture, communication and information, and provide a platform to establish new action-oriented partnerships and further cooperation among various stakeholders.
