The Fourth International Conference of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme will be held from 18 to 21 May 2011 in Warsaw, Poland. It will be jointly organized by the Polish National Commission for UNESCO, the Polish Committee of the Memory of the World Programme, the Head Office of State Archives and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
This 4th Memory of the World Conference is the result of one of the recommendations from the 3rd International Conference, held in Canberra, Australia, in 2008. It will explore the theme “Culture – Memory – Identities” over three-and-a-half days in the Polish capital, in the presence of the leading experts on different aspects of the preservation of documentary heritage from around the world, as well as other professionals active in the area of history and culture.

Participants will discuss in detail the status and further development of the Memory of the World Programme, as well as reflect on the contemporary issues that the Programme must address in the fields of preservation, promotion and accessibility. Primary consideration will be given to the Programme’s role in preserving our collective memory and identity, while ensuring their transmission to future generations.

Poland has been a strong supporter of the Memory of the World Programme from its very beginnings. It hosted the First International Advisory Committee (IAC) meeting in Pultusk in September 1993 and the Sixth IAC Meeting in Gdansk in August 2003. The Regional Consultation on the Conservation, Preservation and Promotion of the Documentary Heritage of the Countries of Central and East Europe was held at the time of the First IAC meeting to examine the situation in the field of preservation and conservation of the library and archival materials in the then fledgling democracies of Central and Eastern Europe.

Further details on the Conference, including the specific themes and workshops, will be made available in the near future.
