Jomtien 1990 - Dakar 2000

©UNESCO-Dakar 2000In April 2000, the global education community gathered at the World Education Forum in Dakar, Senegal, they reaffirmed the vision of the World Declaration on Education for All adopted ten years earlier in Jomtien, Thailand. Resulting in the Dakar Framework for Action “Education for All: Meeting our Collective Commitment” which included six comprehensive Education for All (EFA) goals.

A few months later, eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were established at the United Nations. Featured among the MDGs was one goal on universal access to primary education (MDG 2) and a target on gender parity in education, as part of the goal on gender equality and women’s empowerment (MDG 3).

Over the past 15 years, these internationally agreed goals have catalyzed global action, prompting unprecedented progress in the expansion of educational opportunities.

Despite the achievements, EFA remains an unfinished business.
