The richness and diversity of Afghanistan's cultural heritage and living cultures were severely damaged by the recent conflict and repression. In the current transitional process, enhancing the country's cultural diversity is seen as a key element in reaffirming and consolidating a common Afghan identity and building a culture of democracy. During the period from 2002-2004, UNESCO's intervention in the field of culture had a strong focus on the safeguarding of Afghanistan's tangible cultural heritage. Progressively, activities in the field of living arts and intangible heritage will allow expanding the scope of UNESCO action.
