Rehabilitation of the Prambanan World Heritage Site and Taman Sari Water Castle 

On 27 May 2006, a major earthquake of 5.9 on the Richter scale occurred in Yogyakarta, the “cultural hub” of Indonesia, causing severe damage to its cultural heritage, including the Hindu temples of Prambanan World Heritage Compounds and the Islamic-era Taman Sari Water Castle. 

Following completion of the emergency phase, the objectives of the present international meeting of experts are:

  • To provide technical recommendations for the rehabilitation of the cultural heritage of/in Yogyakarta, and the Prambanan World Heritage Compounds and the Taman Sari Water Castle in particular;
  • To formulate a technical action plan for restoration works in the various cultural sites affected by the earthquake;
  • To assist the Indonesian Government in establishing a global partnership for the post-earthquake rehabilitation of cultural heritage.
