Every community has its cultural and spiritual affiliations reaching back symbolically to the dawn of time, and should be in a position to honour them. Cultural diversity has come under siege owing to the preponderance of a limited number of cultural and linguistic approaches and content disseminated via the new and old media. In order to counter the HIV-AIDS epidemic on the basis of studies carried out in Africa and Asia, culture-sensitive approaches are being proposed so as to bring about changes in attitudes and patterns of behaviour. Accordingly, the socio-cultural factors of the transmission of HIV-AIDS are taken into account in national prevention strategies. Africa, the developing countries, youth and women head the list of UNESCO’s priority areas that are mainstreamed in all the Culture Sector’s programmes. The eradication of poverty and, in particular, extreme poverty, is the objective of a number of trans-disciplinary projects in the field of crafts and activities for developing sustainable tourism in remote areas (the Sahara, Central Asia and the mountainous regions of Asia).
