As biosphere reserves have evolved into more complex and participatory systems, it has becoming crucial to strengthen partnerships among the various stakeholders involved in their management, notably the private sector. Towards this purpose, the Montevideo Regional Office for Science in Latin America and the Caribbean will gather representatives from biosphere reserves to work on the development of a guide on public-private partnerships in biosphere reserves of the region. The meeting will take place on December 15 and 16 in the "Agua y Paz" biosphere reserve in Costa Rica.
The Regional Office of Science for Latin America works towards the implementation of the MAB Strategy 2015-2025 in the region. This global MAB strategy, as well as the regional IBEROMAB strategy 2010-2020, emphasizes the need to engage and establish partnerships with the private sector to achieve effective governance of biosphere reserves and strengthen networks within the MAB program.

Partnerships with the private sector have a key role in to building human relationships and establishing the conditions necessary to achieve sustainable development in biosphere reserves. As biosphere reserves have become more integrated it is important to strengthen existing partnerships involving different stakeholders in the management of these territories, including the private sector. If a partnership with the private sector is successful , it can completely transform the work of the biosphere reserve. Notable examples of such work include in the tourism industry and in the local production of products such as coffee and chocolate.

The goals of the activity ‘Workshop on Public-private partnerships for sustainable development in Latin American and Caribbean biosphere reserves ‘is to (i) share experiences of public-private partnerships in biosphere reserves to (ii) systematize success stories of public-private partnerships in Latin America and the Caribbean biosphere reserves.

Representatives from the following reserves will meet in Costa Rica with the UNESCO regional specialist for MAB and the UNESCO Chair on biosphere reserves and natural world heritage sites at the University for International Cooperation to develop a working guide on public-private partnerships for the region: "Agua y paz" (Costa Rica), "Cordillera Central" (Costa Rica), "Matatlantica " (Brazil), "Mbaracayú" (Paraguay), "Sierra Gorda" (Mexico) and "La Campaña" (Chile).
