Heritage Workshop at the Archaeological Site of La Isabela

La Isabela, inscribed on the World Heritage Tentative List since 2002, is culturally significant for the history of Latin America and the Caribbean, being the first Spanish urban settlement founded in the New World by Christopher Columbus during his second trip in 1494.
Upon the request of the Dominican Republic authorities, the UNESCO Havana office is organizing a technical mission to the historical and archaeological site of La Isabela.

The mission has three main goals:

1. Identify and analyze the value of the site, its state of conservation and outline the main elements for its conservation and management according to current international conservation normative standards;

2. Evaluate the project proposals made by the Ministries of Culture and Tourism for the creation of thematic park devoted to the process of colonization; and

3. Organize a training workshop aimed at disseminating the results of the technical assessment and familiarizing all actors involved in the conservation and tourism development of the site with the core notions of heritage conservation, with particular emphasis on the requirements for the possible inscription of the site on the World Heritage List.

The mission will be undertaken by the cultural heritage experts Grazia Piras and Carolina Castellanos, UNESCO Office in Havana.
