Tanzania - Employment and Social Protection

Working conditions Professional status for artists
There is a general work permit for all artists. For example, foreign artists need to apply for work permits if they wish to work in Tanzania. Though, there is no official professional status for artists. Artists who work in public institutions are promoted in accordance with existing schemes of service. There are different awards which help to give some form of status or recognition to artists.

Health Care System
The health care system applies to all workers. Though It is not for all artists but only for the artists who are employed.

Private Health Care Scheme
The Tanzania Occupational Health Services is a private health scheme. Employed artists have access to this scheme.

Disabled artists
There is no special regime for disabled artists.

Administrative inspections
There is inspection of working environment/premises for safety and health purposes.
The National Arts Council of Tanzania and the local Government Authority carry out the administrative inspection.

Penalties
Penalties may be imposed in the event of breech of regulations such as widrawal of permit or closure of establishment or fine,etc.


SOCIAL WELFARE

Insurance schemes
The insurance scheme is in place. There is the Social Security Fund and the Pension Scheme for employed artists.

Social coverage is compulsory for all employees either in the public or the private sector.

Complementary insurance schemes
Artists obliged to resort to complimentary insurance scheme especially those that are not employed.

Administration of contributions
The State and private firms administer contributions and the payment of the benefits.

REMUNERATION

Minimum Level of Payment
There is a minimum level of payment for all employees in Tanzania. Payment per service/job is negotiable.

Artists are paid directly by their employers.

UNEMPLOYMENT

Unemployment Insurance
There is no unemployment insurance scheme for artists.
