Algeria has seven sites inscribed on the World Heritage List and has proposed several other properties for its Tentative List.

Algeria was the first State Party to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Moreover, the Algerian poetic and musical genre, the Ahellil of Gourara, was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2005.
In the field of cultural industries, Algeria is currently modernizing its publishing sector. The first tangible results were the adoption of a new law on copyright and the establishment of an inter-ministerial and inter-professional council for the fight against piracy. In the framework of the “Sahara of Cultures and People” project, which aims at elaborating strategies for sustainable development and the fight against poverty based on the safeguarding and enhancement of heritage, the Ksour Route project was implemented. This project is designed to develop sustainable tourism in the Saharan countries.
