Gambia has two cultural heritage sites on the World Heritage List, one of which – the James Island – is linked to slavery.
The country participates in work projects undertaken by the World Heritage Centre concerning Africa.
The Kankurang, Manding Initiatory Rite was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005. A safeguarding project was launched to protect this ritual which is also practised in Senegal.
UNESCO and Gambia also cooperate in the development of the book industry.
