The Libyan Arab Jamahiriya is seeking to develop its historic past through activities centred on preservation and promotion of its cultural sites - five of them inscribed on the World Heritage List.
The country is also concerned with its underwater heritage as demonstrated by its ratification of the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage in 2005.
In the area of intercultural dialogue, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya has contributed to the publication of several series of general and regional histories launched by UNESCO. The Libyan Funds-in-Trust financed in part the General History of Africa. The World Islamic Call Society lent its support to the following publication series: the History of Humanity, the History of Civilizations of Central Asia and the Different Aspects of Islamic Culture.
Training in traditional leatherwork is another pole of cultural activity.
Concerning cultural tourism, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya is associated with the Sahara of Cultures and People project.
