The Syrian Arab Republic alone has four cultural sites inscribed on the World Heritage List.

Its Tentative List contains more than 15 sites that bear witness to its long history. Moreover, the country receives special support for the preparation of nomination files for one of the many "Forgotten Villages" of Saint Simeon. The country’s cooperation with UNESCO is related largely to activities such as training, documentation, restoration, management, technical assistance and development through tourism associated with the sites.
Syria is aware of the importance of countering illicit traffic of cultural property in the region. In this regard, it participates in various workshops organized by the UNESCO Beirut Office for training in the specialized tools used to combat this phenomenon.
