With the presence of Angkor on its territory, Cambodia can justly claim to possess one of the most famous heritage sites in the world. Moreover, the country’s past and present cooperation with UNESCO is oriented towards the conservation and development of this site. However, other cultural sites are now being put forward for inscription on the World Heritage List.
In the field of living heritage, an action plan has been implemented to promote and safeguard the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, which was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. The Sbek Thom, Khmer Shadow Theatre received this distinction in 2005. An inventory of Cambodia's intangible cultural heritage has also been published.
UNESCO/Cambodia cooperation is operational in other areas too: natural heritage, cultural tourism and renewal of traditional crafts as a mainspring for sustainable development, creativity and the cultural approach to the prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS.
