Represented on the World Heritage List by six cultural sites, the Islamic Republic of Iran, in cooperation with UNESCO, is committed to safeguarding and enhancing its cultural property, which includes numerous ancient sites.

Priority has been given to the conservation of sites, notably the remarkable earthen complex of Chogha Zanbil and the city of Bam, which has been inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger since the severe earthquake of 2003. Projects in the areas of cultural tourism and eco-tourism have been developed to enhance these sites and to raise awareness among local communities on the general notion of heritage. Moreover, plans to develop them by means of policies of cultural tourism and responsible ecotourism will bring about greater awareness of heritage in a general sense. The country would also like other sites to be inscribed on the World Heritage List, as attested by its tentative list.

In the framework of the programme on Intercultural Dialogue in Central Asia, Iran is a member of the International Institute for Central Asian Studies, which aims to encourage intellectual cooperation between Member States of the region.
