UNESCO and Women Leadership Academy

UNESCO and Women Leadership Academy (China) sign a Letter of Cooperation to promote gender equality and women’s leadership.

            On 17 October 2015, UNESCO and the Women Leadership Academy (WLA) came together in Beijing, China for The International Symposium on Women’s Leadership in the Digital Era. During the Opening Session of the Conference,  a Letter of Cooperation (LoC) was signed between UNESCO and the WLA that provides for close cooperation to promote gender equality learning and leadership programmes in partnership with other universities and research institutions. This partnership is the first of its kind with national (China) and regional (south and south-east Asia) outreach and cooperation, with the goal of promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment and women’s leadership.

The Opening Ceremony was attended by high-level Chinese and international women leaders, including Ms Chen Zhili, the Honorary President of WLA, Vice Chairwoman of the 11th NPC and Chairwoman of the 10th All China Women’s Federation (ACWF); Ms Meng Xiaosi, Deputy Secretary, Vice-President of the Party Committee of ACWF and Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee; and Ms Li Weihong, Former Vice-Minister of Education.

Professor Liu Jinan, President of WLA, signed the Cooperation Agreement on behalf of the WLA and commended UNESCO for its work on promoting gender equality, expressing her enthusiasm for the new partnership. The LoC was signed by Ms Irina Bokova, Director-General, on behalf of UNESCO.

Saniye Gülser Corat, Director of Gender Equality at UNESCO, attended the Conference and the signing ceremony on behalf of UNESCO and was appointed as one of 18 members of the Academic Committee of WLA.  Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, she reiterated the importance of gender equality for UNESCO, where it has been a global priority since 2008.  

Based on the resources and brand influence of the World Women University Presidents Forum (WWUPF), the Women Leadership Academy was jointly launched by the Communication University of China and Jiangsu Educational Development Foundation of Chinese and Foreign Women University Presidents. The Academy, registered as a non-governmental and non-profit organization in 2013, was inaugurated at the Opening Ceremony of the Sixth World Women University Presidents’ Forum on 6 September 2014 in Beijing, China. The Academy is dedicated to the study and promotion of women’s leadership by facilitating international cooperation and innovation.
