About the Education Sector

UNESCO

Education is one of UNESCO’s principal fields of activities. Since its creation in 1945, the Organization has worked to improve education worldwide believing it to be key to social and economic development.

The Organization aims to help build a sustainable world with just societies that value knowledge, promote peace, celebrate diversity and defend human rights, achieved by providing Education for All (EFA).

Its close links with education ministries and other partners in 193 countries place UNESCO in a key position to press for action and change.

The Education Sector comprises some 400 staff members worldwide. They are based at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, in field offices and UNESCO’s Institutes and Centres specialized in education.

The sector is under the authority of the Assistant Director-General for Education. A Director is in charge of the Executive Office.

  • Headquarters in Paris
Some 150 staff members work in the Education Sector in Paris. The sector is composed of the Executive Office, four Programme Divisions and an Education for All international coordination team (flow chart, 38,5KB).
  • Field Offices
UNESCO has 52 field offices including four regional bureaux for education in Bangkok, Beirut, Dakar and Santiago. Most offices have an education officer and maintain close relations with governments, development partners and civil society. They work to advance UNESCO's goals, assist in designing and implementing programmes, and raise extra-budgetary funds.
  • UNESCO Institutes and Centres for Education
Six Institutes and two Centres work as part of UNESCO’s Education Sector to assist countries in tackling their particular education challenges. The UNESCO Institute for Statistics also works closely with the Education Sector.
