Africa is a priority for UNESCO and education is key to the region’s development. UNESCO’s Regional Bureau for Education in Dakar and 15 field offices serving sub-Saharan Africa work to keep education high on the agenda of governments and development partners.

UNESCO’s International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA) focuses on improving the quality of teacher education in the region.

UNESCO provides expertise to governments on reforming and rebuilding educational systems. The Organization promotes literacy and education programs for all, throughout life. UNESCO coordinates operational projects in basic, secondary, technical, higher, distance and HIV/AIDS education.
