UNESCO Director-General Welcomes Historic UN Security Council Resolution on Youth, Peace and Security

On 10 December, the UNESCO Director-General welcomed the United Nations Security Council Resolution on Youth, Peace and Security. Sponsored by Jordan, Resolution 2250 underlines the vital role of young women and men in building peace and countering the rise of violent extremism.

“I applaud the vision that has guided Jordan in focusing the UN Security Council on the essential role of young people in peacebuilding,” said Irina Bokova. “This is vital for inclusive and sustainable development everywhere.”

The UNESCO Director-General spoke at the opening of the first “Global Forum on Youth, Peace, and Security,” in Amman, Jordan on 21 August, 2015, resulting in the Amman Youth Declaration. This was preceded by the debate organised by Jordan at UN Security Council on 23 April, with a ground-breaking speech by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II.

The Security Council Resolution is vital at a time when there are some 600 million young women and men living in fragile states, including conflicts, without access to quality education, civic engagement or dignified employment.

“This is a human rights crisis, a development disaster, and a security imperative,” said the Director-General. “This is why UNESCO is promoting education to prevent violent extremism and empowering young women and men to counter youth radicalisation online. We must redouble all efforts to strengthen the participation of young people in building peace.”
