UNESCO and Youth - Strategy

Capacity development for the transition to adulthood

UNESCO focuses on building the necessary skills and competencies for young citizens to be autonomous, facilitating their transition to adulthood. The objective is to enhance youth literacy, employability, civic engagement, creativity and wellbeing. The Organization works with youth organizations, teachers, trainers, researchers and youth workers to improve learning and training opportunities for young women and men in a variety of areas directly related to their development, such as life skills, technical and vocational education and training, entrepreneurship, sustainable development, use of ICTs, civic participation and leadership, science, technology and innovation, arts, sport, sexuality and HIV/AIDS. Throughout this work, UNESCO promotes equal access to quality education at all levels, as well as youth-led work in non-formal education and learning contexts.


What does this mean for young women and men?

  • Successful educational and learning programmes are developed and built upon.
  • Youth-sensitive content is integrated into national curricula, and used in pedagogical and learning tools.
  • Informal and non-formal educational programmes are developed, particularly for marginalized youth.
  • Youth-adult partnerships are implemented to support educational objectives.
