On Sunday 20 April, at the Central Library of Kabul University, well-known afghan authors present their works at a celebration marking World Book and Copyright Day, with the support of UNESCO, the World Bank, Kabul University and the Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University (ACKU). The event is opened by the Minister of Higher Education Mohammad Azam Dadfar, the Director of UNESCO in Afghanistan Shigeru Aoyagi, the Director of the Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University Nancy Dupree and other distinguished speakers including the Afghan author and journalist Rahnaward Zaryab. The opening is followed by a book fair open to the public at which newly published books by Afghan authors would be on display at the library for three days until Tuesday, 22 April.
On Monday 21 April, in Roma, the National Syndicate of the Writers inaugurates the programming of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO by a debate within the Central National Library. Actually, it addresses an invitation - “Read your planet” - to the libraries, institutions, schools and associations of stakeholders of the sector as well as the Italian Committee IYPE involved in the celebrations of the International Year of the Planet Earth.
On April 22, at Oxford University Press, there will be a symbolic handover of books from the publisher's Headway series, inaugurating a project of the Book Wish Foundation and CORD to provide books to Darfur refugees in eastern Chad.
On Wednesday 23 April, UNESCO Quito will announce among other cultural events the winner of the Literary Competition in Spanish and Kichwa “Day of the Book and the Rose” with the Ecuadorian Ministries of Education and Culture, the Ecuadorian Institute of the Intellectual Property, the Catholic University of Equator and Latin American Institute of Natural and Cultural Heritage.
The same day, during the "Breakfast with Books", the political leaders are invited by the National Commission of Netherlands Antilles for UNESCO to sign the commitment with which they agreed to acknowledge and support the Curacao Public Library. The young poets of Poetic Colours will present their innovative working the Public Library, during a cultural event which will be held for the wide audience on the evening.
In France, the Horsemeat Butcher's at Romans proposes to volunteer for a 24 hours non-stop reading session of ‘Les Misérables’ by Victor Hugo, including light food, drinks and surprises.
In Bilbao, the traditional street exhibition and sale of discount books is realised for the ninth consecutive year. The Iruña and La Granja Coffeeshops give books to those who go to their premises and ask a “Book Menu To eat” made up of wide and appetizing range of books among which the clients choose “the book that they desire”, like they select the plates they wish to eat. In addition, and since 2004, both coffees have organized
a contest of literary culture on their website and reward two prize winners by three menus.
In Copenhagen, the Catalan association Casa Català participates in Day by transmitting the origin of this holiday with its donations of roses to the lovers such as in Catalonia each April 23.
In Switzerland, the Book Lobby organises many activities intended to various publics (readings, debates, workshops, exhibitions…) through the theme “Reading is travelling”.
In Senegal, the Director of BREDA has introduiced the theme « The link between publishing and languages » of this Day and the stands of the regional actors for Reading (UNICEF, PAM, DPRE, CONFEMEN, FASTEF, UNESCO, INEADE, BLD, Dicorama) and various cultural activities.
In Luxembourg, the Federation of the booksellers, the Ministry of National Education and Professional Training, the Ministry for the Culture, Higher education and Research, the National Library, the National Centre of Literature and the Archives linked their efforts to give a very particular visibility to the Day of the book. Thus, from 23 to 26 April, a vast program of activities around the book and the reading will be proposed with the public and to school classes.
Within the framework of the National Program of Reading Promotion and to commemorate World Book and Copyright Day, various activities will be presented in the state library of the state of Tabasco (Mexico) from 21 to 25 April.
