A Magical Night of Shadow Puppets, Yeak Laom Concert and Collectors’ Exhibition: UNESCO Office in Phnom Penh and Bophana Center Celebrate the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2010
30-11-2010 6:30 am On October 27 2010, UNESCO, in collaboration with Bophana Audiovisual Center, celebrated the UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2010. A half-day conference was followed by Cambodian art performances in the evening. The aim of the day’s celebration was to remind the community, government and national and international organizations about the importance of preserving Cambodia’s audiovisual heritage. The theme for this year was: “Save and Savour your audiovisual collections—Now!”
2010.10.27 - UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage34.JPG For Cambodia, especially in light of its recent, tragic past, safeguarding its documentary and audiovisual heritage is tremendously important. The painful past which is reflected in many of its photography, film, and documentary collections must be remembered and preserved in our memory to ensure that such tragedies do not occur again. Transmitting this collective memory to the future generations will engender dialogue and will allow them to shape a common future founded on mutual understanding.

Significant audiovisual heritage are often found in the possession of individual collectors or amateur artists. Such collections tell stories of the past in the most remarkable and vivid ways. Five notable collectors of Cambodian audiovisual heritage were invited to share their collections and their stories.

The Day attracted over two hundred participants including students, teachers, government officials, members of the UNESCO National Commission, and NGOs. Distinguished guests, including Mr. Sin Chansaya, Director of the Department of Cinema at the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, participated in this dialogue. H.E. Mr. Son Soubert, High Privy Councillor to His Majesty the King, spoke about Cambodia’s historical and artistic past through photos taken by an individual amateur in the 1970s.

The highlight of the event was the shadow puppet show in the evening which garnered much public attention. H.E. Mr. Pich Tum Kravel, Advisor to Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, presented on how the Shadow Theater, Sbek Thom, was revitalized thanks to the efforts of a few surviving artists after the art form was nearly destroyed during the Khmer Rouge time. The event succesfully promoted public awareness of audiovisual heritage and ignited a dynamic discussion.
