Promoting democracy and freedom of expression

With financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), UNESCO is implementing a project strengthening freedom of expression and democracy in countries spread across the Middle East, Latin America, Africa and Asia.

The project, entitled “Promoting democracy and freedom of expression” aims to foster peace, sustainable development and democracy through empowering free, pluralistic and independent media at the global, regional and national levels, with a strong focus on gender, youth and media and information literacy.

Overview of Activities

The project is divided into two components: on one hand, the activities promote awareness and research on world trends in freedom of expression and media development at the international level; on the other hand, the activities build capacity through regional and national interventions.

Through preparing individuals to deal with modern communications autonomously, the project stimulates literacy across all layers of society, especially amongst young people who are often excluded by mainstream media. Likewise, women remain underrepresented in media content and among media professionals. Next to youth and women, the project targets media professionals, stakeholders involved in media legislation, Member States and the public at large, in the target countries and across the world.

In the context of the post-2015 development agenda, it is an appropriate time to promote freedom of expression and media development as key factors for fostering sustainable development and democracy. The project will further build upon achievements and strengthen the environment for freedom of expression, press freedom, journalistic safety and self-regulation, for both online and offline media platforms, especially in post-conflict countries and countries in transition.
