Under the project: Enhancing Access to Information and Freedom of Expression for Syrian Refugees in Jordan through Radio Programs, the UNESCO Amman office recently produced this short film on the Sa’a Suriya (Syrian hour) Radio programme.

As it is a mass medium that reaches to the widest audience in the world, radio has a strong and specific role in emergency and post-conflict situations. Launched in 2012 with funding from the Government of Sweden, and currently in its second phase funded by the Government of Japan, the Sa’a Suriya radio programme is part of the response to the Syria crisis. The programme has become a well-known and much needed source of information that targets Syrian refugees residing in host communities in Jordan. Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanian youth, in particular in the northern governorates of Irbid and Mafraq in addition to Amman and Zarqa are the primary beneficiaries of the programme. The programme closely cooperates with the two community radios in Irbid (Yarmouk FM) and Amman (Farah al Nas).

Implemented by the UNESCO Amman Office, in partnership with NGO "Un ponte per… " (UPP), the programme serves as a communication platform to access information, voice personal stories and interact with the local community and service providers. Through the project, 40 Jordanian youth have been trained on basic citizen journalism skills, radio techniques and conflict sensitive reporting.
