Information meeting on the General History of Africa project

The purpose of this meeting is to inform the delegations of Member States on the status of the implementation of Phase II of the General History of Africa (GHA) and efforts made by UNESCO to ensure its continuity.
This project aims to contribute to the renovation of the teaching of African history, the harmonization of its use in higher education and, thereby, to the construction of the African citizenship based on shared values as well as common heritage of the peoples of the continent. In this regard, a regional conference with 100 participants (university presidents, deans, heads of History Department, media and publishers) was held in Accra, Cape Coast, Ghana from 21 to 24 October 2013.

Phase II will also undertake the updating of the GHA by preparing a ninth volume taking into account recent developments and research concerning Africa and the African diaspora since the publication of the last volume.
