SPEECH SEARCH TOOL - CULTURE

USER GUIDE

 

TYPE OF DOCUMENT

The selection of one of the following types is mandatory.
Speeches: speeches delivered by UNESCO officials at events within and outside UNESCO
Messages: messages from UNESCO officials for UNESCO and non-UNESCO events and occasions
Forewords: forewords/prefaces by UNESCO officials in non-serial publications produced by UNESCO or other sources
Articles: editorials, interviews, essays, op-eds and messages by UNESCO officials in publications, including forewords/prefaces in serial publications

 

AUTHOR

Searches selected items by UNESCO officials, such as the UNESCO Director-General (DG), the UNESCO Deputy Director-General (DDG) and the UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture (ADG/CLT) dating back to 1999. For pre-1999 documents please search the UNESDOC database. To search for texts by other UNESCO officials (e.g. Division Director / Section Head), enter the name of the person in ‘Words from bibliographic record’ or ‘Words from title’ (see below).

 

PUBLICATION YEAR

You can limit the search to one year, e.g. 2013 or a period of time, e.g. from 1999 to 2009.
For pre-1999 documents please search the UNESDOC database.
To search for a specific issue date of a speech or message, use ‘Words from record’ or ‘Words from title’ (see below).

 

LANGUAGE


Searches documents in the language(s) selected. If no language is selected, the search tool retrieves documents in all languages. To select and deselect multiple items, use the CTRL key.

 

WORDS FROM TITLE

To find variations of a word, truncate with asterisk (right and/or left), e.g.:
exhibit* to find ‘exhibit’ and ‘exhibition’
*touris* to find ‘tourist’, ‘touristic’, ‘tourism’ and ‘ecotourism’
*tangible to find ‘tangible’ and ‘intangible’

To search a specific issue date of a speech or message in the title, enter the date as it appears in the title, e.g. 18 décembre 2013 or 8 March 2013.

All words in field: searches for one or several words in the specified field in any order
Any word in field: searches for any word in the specified field

 

KEYWORDS

Searches selected keywords commonly used in the UNESCO Culture Sector based on the UNESCO Thesaurus.

 

PROGRAMMES


Searches selected culture-related UNESCO or UN programmes, conventions, international days/years/decades, prizes etc. as subject.

 

COUNTRY

Searches the country as subject. To search a place as the venue of a speech/message use ‘Words from title´ (see above).

 

TYPE OF EVENT

Searches selected events as the occasion of a speech or message.


WORDS FROM BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORD

Searches for words or groups of words in all fields within the UNESDOC bibliographic record. Stopwords like "a, the, for" are not searchable. (See the list of stopwords).

To find variations of a word, truncate with asterisk (right and/or left), e.g.:
exhibit* to find ‘exhibit’ and ‘exhibition’
*touris* to find ‘tourist’, ‘touristic’, ‘tourism’ and ‘ecotourism’
*tangible to find ‘tangible’ and ‘intangible’

To search a specific issue date of a speech/message, enter the date according to the following format in English irregardless of the language of the document: 12 Jan. 2012 or Jan. 2012 (Feb., Mar., Apr., May, June, July, Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov., Dec.).

All words in same phrase: searches for one or several words in the same phrase
All words in same record: searches for one or several words in the same bibliographic record
Any word in record: searches for any word in the record

 

WORDS FROM FULL TEXT

Searches for words or groups of words in the full text of the document´s pdf file. Stopwords like "a, the, for" are not searchable except for ‘exact phrase’ option. (See the list of stopwords).

To find variations of a word, truncate with asterisk (right and/or left), e.g.:
exhibit* to find ‘exhibit’ and ‘exhibition’
*touris* to find ‘tourist’, ‘touristic’, ‘tourism’ and ‘ecotourism’
*tangible to find ‘tangible’ and ‘intangible’

All words in same phrase: searches for one or several words in the same phrase in any order
Similar phrase: searches for all words in same order and finds variations of stopwords, e.g. ‘culture and development’ finds ‘culture and development’, ‘culture for development’, ‘culture in development’ etc.
Exact phrase: searches for an exact phrase including stopwords
All words in same document: searches for one or several words in the same document
Any word in document: searches for any word in the document

 

CATALOG NUMBER

Sequential number assigned automatically to bibliographic records.
