Meeting at UNESCO Headquarters of the International Scientific Committee of the Volume IX of the General History of Africa (GHA)

Second meeting for the Drafting of the Volume IX of the General History of Africa (GHA): objectives and expected results

UNESCO in Paris (Room XVI), 16 - 19 June 2014

In accordance with the schedule decided upon in Salvador, a conceptual note was drafted by Professor Augustin Holl, Chairperson of the Committee, to summarize the main aspects of Volume IX and constitute an intellectual reference framework for the work of the contributors. Likewise, all the Committee members prepared a list of the best specialists in African history and African diasporas to form a pool of authors who might make a useful contribution to the volume. Finally, the coordinators of each book have each established a chapter structure that they will have the task of managing.

Building on this preparatory work by the Committee members (conceptual note, pool of authors and structure of the volume’s sections), the second meeting, which will be held at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France, from 16 to 19 June, will be a decisive stage that will enable the detailed identification of the content of Volume IX (number of chapters and chapter synopses, etc.) and the selection of its contributors.

The second meeting of the International Scientific Committee for Volume IX of the General History of Africa will then have the objective of:

  • validating the proposals made by the coordinators of each book;
  • determining the detailed plan for Volume IX as a whole;
  • selecting the contributors to Volume IX; <//span><//span><//span><//span><//span><//span>
  • deciding upon an action plan setting out the production schedule, monitoring contributors’ work, proofreading and initially validating texts;
  • engaging in exchanges with Permanent Delegations to UNESCO about the ramifications of the General History of Africa and of its Volume IX in particular.

Participants in the meeting:

  • International Scientific Committee for the Volume IX of the General History of Africa (GHA)
