ARTICLE 19 is an international human rights organisation which defends and promotes freedom of expression and freedom of information all over the world.

 

Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)

The Committee to Protect Journalists is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1981 to monitor abuses against the press and promotes press freedom around the world.

 

Ethical Journalism Initiative

The Ethical Journalism Initiative website is a new campaign to rekindle old values in media worldwide, launched by the International Federation of Journalists.

 

Inter American Press Association (IAPA)

The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) is a press advocacy group representing media organizations in North America, South America and the Caribbean. IAPA's stated objectives are to defend press freedom, protect the interests of the press in the Americas, promote responsible journalism, and encourage hight standards of professional and business conduct.

 

International Federation of Journalists (IFJ)

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) promotes international action to defend press freedom and social justice through strong, free and independent trade unions of journalists.

 

International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX)

The International Freedom of Expression eXchange (IFEX) is a global network of around 90 non-governmental organisations that promotes and defends the right to freedom of expression. IFEX exchanges information online and mobilises action on issues such as press freedom, Internet censorship, freedom of information legislation, criminal defamation and insult laws, media concentration and attacks on journalists, writers, human rights defenders and Internet users.

 

International News Safety Institute

The International News Safety Institute (INSI) is a coalition of news organisations, journalist support groups and individuals exclusively dedicated to the safety of news media staff working in dangerous environments. INSI's purpose is to create a global safety network of advice and assistance to journalists and other news gatherers who may face danger covering the news on international assignment or in their own countries.

 

International Press Institute (IPI)

International Press Institute is the global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists, dedicated to freedom of the press and improving the standards and practices of journalism.

 

Internet Governance Forum

This is the official web site of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), run by the IGF Secretariat. Its purpose is to support the United Nations Secretary-General in carrying out the mandate from the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) with regard to convening a new forum for multi-stakeholder policy dialogue - the Internet Governance Forum (IGF).

The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights was created to stimulate awareness of the importance of the full observance of freedom of expression and information in the Americas.

 

Open Society Justice Initiative

The Open Society Justice Initiative uses law to protect and empower people around the world. Through litigation, advocacy, research, and technical assistance, the Justice Initiative promotes human rights and builds legal capacity for open societies. Among other focus issues, it works to address legacies of secrecy and repression around the world by supporting freedom of information laws and combating government interference with media freedom.

 

OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media observes media developments in all 56 OSCE participating States. She provides early warning on violations of freedom of expression and promotes full compliance with OSCE press freedom commitments.

 

Reporters Without Borders

In some countries a journalist can be thrown in prison for years for a single offending word or photo. Jailing or killing a journalist removes a vital witness to events and threatens the right of us all to be informed. Reporters Without Borders has fought for press freedom on a daily basis since it was founded in 1985.

Right2INFO.org features resources on the constitutional and legal framework for the rights to information and case law from more than 80 countries. Focusing on good law and practice, the website presents comparative overviews and country summaries on the current status of the right to information. It brings together the contributions of experts from dozens of countries.

 

Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression

The United Nations Commission on Human Rights, in resolution 1993/45 of 5 March 1993, decided to appoint a Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to information of opinion and expression. The mandate was extended by the Commission on Human Rights in 2002, at its 58th session (Res. 2002/48).

 

The Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression in Africa

The Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression in Africa was appointed by the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights by a decision adopted at its 36th Ordinary Session held from 23 November to 7 December 2004, in Dakar, Senegal.
