UNESCO Response in Syria

© UNESCO, Aleppo

UNESCO response in Syria focuses in particular on:

  • addressing urgent humanitarian needs in education
  • ensuring emergency protection of the Syrian cultural heritage

Thanks to the funding provided by the European Union, UNESCO with its other strategic partners, on 1 March 2014, launched a three-year project, the Emergency Safeguarding of the Syrian Heritage.

In addition to the existing emergency response, UNESCO has focused its support on education inside Syria.

Priority areas for UNESCO action are teacher training in technical and vocational education, accelerated learning programmes, extra-curricular activities, and remedial psycho-social support.

A related $950,000 project was included in the UN coordinated humanitarian action plan (SHARP). UNESCO is in the process of funds mobilization for this project and other priorities.
