2004 Initiatives

Programmes, projects, inititiatives, actions and ideas. The following are some suggestions, many of which have already provided ideas on how to enhance the content of the annual 23 April celebration.

Initiatives by publishers and librarians: - Special campaign "give a book, give a rose", inspired by the beautiful Catalan tradition (Spain) - "The book in the street" celebration, with special "World Day" discounts and authors' signatures - Production of promotional materials with the logo designed by UNESCO for this Day (posters for exhibition in public places, flags, stickers, page markers, pins, T-shirts, postcards, etc.) - Sales and donations of unsold materials to libraries in economically disadvantaged sectors, socially underprivileged areas, hospitals, prisons refugee camps, etc.

Initiatives by teachers and librarians: - Reading contests for children and young people - Promotion of young authors: literary creation contests (tales, novels and poems) - Exhibits and lectures on the book and its production process - Sensitization of students and readers to the respect of copyright - Book exhibitions on specific topics or on the work of an author - National contests of slogans about books and authors. The winning slogan could be used the following year - An "Open Doors Day" at libraries Promotion of literature events and coffee shop discussions with the participation of authors, readers, students, parents, etc. - Mailings promoting reading services provided by libraries - Mobilization of young volunteers prepared to read to the sick, the elderly, the blind, the illiterate, etc. in their homes, according to the beautiful African tradition of "public readers".

Initiatives by the mass media: - Publication of articles and specialized supplements about books, reading, copyright, the incidence of piracy, etc. in newspapers and magazines - Special radio and television programmes concerning books and copyright (debates, interviews, contests, etc.). The future of the printed word in multimedia society could be proposed as a current events theme. - Promotion of new writers, artists, composers, filmmakers, etc. - Recognition of the creative work of the journalist - Analysis of the extent and detrimental impact of piracy on national creativity - Debate on the role of translation in intercultural communication - Discussion on the importance of books and reading in education for all, literacy and adult education - Analysis of the national book industry in global development planning - Round table on public libraries and their irreplaceable role in the democratization of culture.

Initiatives by  professionals  and academics circles concerned by copyright: - organize an open-day and invite students from UNESCO Copyright Chairs to make presentations on copyright and related rights to students of other faculties, - organize copyright awareness day open to the general public; organize discussions amongst lawyers, authors and creators on new copyright topics, - arrange visits to collective management organizations for students specializing in the subject, - organize essay contests on the role of copyright for economic and cultural development, - organize meetings amongst law students and professionals from the copyright industry (publishers and producers).

UNESCO’s National Commissions in each of its Member States are the focal points for the promotion, encouragement and co-ordination of national activities around the World Book and Copyright Day, such as: - Holding press conferences to disseminate information about this world celebration, - Organizing forums and debates around some of the proposed topics or other selected themes, - Negotiating the issue of a special 'World Book and Copyright Day' stamp, - Promoting the logo on public transport, in railway stations and airports, - Recording national efforts undertaken for this celebration, - And any other ideas which could contribute each year to generate the greatest possible public mobilization on 23 April.The National Commissions further represent the basic strategic elements aimed to ensure the success and continuity of this event, which forms part of the world cultural calendar.
