From 19 to 23 October 2014, it is the turn of Jordan’s Hashemite University to host UNESCO’s Ethics Teachers Training Course (ETTC) in Amman. This is the first time it is held in the Arab Region since the course that was held in 2007 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Responding to the need expressed by UNESCO Member States and the local partners for quality ethics education in the Arab region, UNESCO put together a team of prominent ethics professors with a nuanced understanding of the region – Dr Manal Bouhaimed from Kuwait University, Dr Bahaa Darwish from University of Minia, Egypt, and Dr Nada Eltaiba from Qatar University. They are sharing their knowledge and experience about how to effectively teach ethics, and how to disseminate universal bioethical norms and principles through education. The beneficiaries of the training are ethics educators from Jordan and other countries in the region, eager to build their pedagogical capacities in bioethics.
The ETTC project is part of UNESCO’s Bioethics Programme to support and promote quality ethics education around the world by building professional capacities of teachers. The ETTC graduates, numbering in several hundred after numerous events held around the world, become UNESCO’s partners in promoting and applying the bioethical norms and principles of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights.
This ETTC Course in Jordan is a collaborative effort involving the Jordanian National Commission for UNESCO, Hashemite University and the National Bioethics Committee of Jordan. In 2014, a Course is also planned to be held in Muscat, Oman (7-11 December), as well as other venues to be announced for 2015.
