Promoting peace education throughout West Africa

UNESCO Dakar plays a lead role in the promotion of human rights, citizenship, democracy, and regional integration that aims to instill the values of peace in West Africa. As a result, we work closely with our partners to proffer conditions of peace throughout the region. Recently, our efforts regarding Peace Education have been concentrated into two projects.

Peace Education Project in West Africa

UNESCO Dakar coordinated a project on Education on Peace for Development in West Africa. Launched in 2006, the project resulted in the development of the ECOWAS Reference Manual to advocate and provide guidance regarding the necessary conditions for peace in the region.

Also, an online self-study course was made available in French, English, and Portuguese. Both the Reference Manual and the course are being promoted in the sub-region through DVDs and flash drives to reach out to a broad audience.

The official title of the project was “Consolidation of ECOWAS policy for the Promotion of human rights’ education, citizenship and culture of peace, democracy and regional integration in the formal education system of the fifteen Member States and particularly in post-conflict countries". The project covered all 15 countries of the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) and was funded by the African Development Bank.

The UNCCT-UNESCO project

Launched in September 2014, the one-year UNCCT-UNESCO project promoted peace education via conflict management, citizenship, democracy and good governance. It specifically focused on the fight against terrorism in the Sahel region and Burkina Faso, using the ECOWAS Reference Manual to promote the importance and implementation of peace.

A specific effort is being made by the UN Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force and UNESCO Dakar to target youth in Burkina Faso and Mali. This initiative contributes to activities under the United Nations joint initiative to build resilience in the Sahel due to terrorism in the north of Mali.
