Bioethics

Human Cloning, Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Induced Pluripotential Stem Cells, Genomics study, gene therapy...  We are witnessing everyday the rapid progress in scientific research and its medical applications.  However, such new technologies have raised various ethical concerns which should be carefully addressed from multidisciplinary perspectives.

UNESCO has been actively working on standard setting at the global level which resulted in the adoption of three key international instruments in the field of bioethics which are:

  • Universal Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights (1997)
  • International Declaration on Human Genetic Data (2003)
  • Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (2005)

Nevertheless, actual implementation of these principles into practice needs careful consideration of cultural and religious context in each region.  We try to identify urgent issues to be addressed in the Arab region and promote dialogues towards capacity building.
